The awful economic condition, the dry land, and the abominable climate, cause these challenges for farmers. Like the problem of harvesting, the economic problem for them if they can't sell these crops very well, even the problem that caused by the bad climate. That's the conditions for them, they need to cherish all of the things they have, and use these precious things carefully! Like Billie's father, just hope there has a little rain for them, to solve the problem that they can't harvest crops wery well in three years. I think the setting in this book so far, is that they have their own hopenesses, just for the little wishes, and wait for the chance or make it by themselves, that is, the characters in this book need to find the chance, or they need to work hard to find them, to accomplish their hopenesses!
In the 1930’s, America suffered The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. That was a hard time for the people who lived in that time. A lot of people starved and died during the time, and the author chose the setting for the novel. Billie Jo was a typical girl during the time. Her family had serious economy problem, their farm couldn’t grow anything, and so did their neighborhoods. Because of the hard time, many people died, but there are also some people who were determined to live. For instance, Billie Jo’s father believed that the suffering would pass, and the rain would soon come. Those optimistic people gave hopes to the period, and so does Billie’s family, and I think the baby signified a new hope. Also, the hard tome made the people diligent and work hard without complaint. Those are attitudes for a successful person. The author not only wanted to show the hard time that they suffered, but also wanted to give us hope. If they had hopes during The Great Depression, we should give up ourselves.
In 1930~ right at the suffering time of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl problems. From P.23 the poem "Breaking Drought" you can see how the living that situation is alful! Time with only dust, sand, sun, most of us WILL gone crazy I think. Evreyone had hard time in that days, I think the word suffering is not great enough to discribe these time. Like what Iris wrote "Billie Joe's father believed that the suffering would pass, and the rain would soon come" and so does other farmers, too. Although this made the felt better while working (just guesting) but the "cold-bloded" dust and drought distroy their wishes agian and agian. I really think the auther done a great job choosing this setting. It made people read and feel hopes in tis setting. To make the farmers' family more real, the story really been put "condition (or place)" to make the fellins of hopes and wishes that was only left to stand by thier side during this time. by*David
According to the book, we know that the time in America now is really a tough time. Many people there are really poor and lots of people died because of the dust. I think the auther had chose this setting because she commiserates those person in that time. People in fatories have no work because of awful econemy so they don't have money to buy things they want. How about the farmers? They didn't succeed in escaping The Great Depression, too. Their wheats were destroyed by the ruthless wind and the hard rain. If this things happen to me, I think I'll be very painful. Maybe the people in that time felt the same as I, but they never give up their great hope. So I think the auther wants to teach us to cherish what we have got now and never never forgo when we are stuck by a terrible problem even though it isn't easy to solve. We live in a great place, not in a disaster, but a peaceful and wealthy country, so when we have a tough time, think about people in The Great Depression, then you will know what to do.
The story happen in The Great Depression, because of the enviroment(no rain, dry land), most of the farmer can't have harvest. People is poor in that time. This setting make them need to be really staunch because they have to face a lot of problem and fail.
