Billie Jo's father put a pail of kerosene (oil to make fire) by the stove. When her mother was making breakfast, she thought the oil was water, and poured to the stove. Instead of putting out fire, she made a fire accident. Her mom was frightened and she ran away to found her husband, leaving Billie Jo behind. Billie Jo thought it’s dangerous to leave the burning pail behind, so she threw it out of the window. Surprisingly, her mom went back, and the flaming oil splashed onto her apron. Then, her mother was on fire. Billie Jo tried to save her, but both of them were burned. After few days, Billie Jo’s mother died when she gave birth to the baby. Both adult and baby died.
I was surprised of the accident. The accident shouldn’t happen. If I were Billie Jo, I would not be able to handle the situation. I felt sorry to Billie Jo, and that’s the only thing I could say. The accident would influence Billie Jo’s life thoroughgoing. The other people would think that Billie Jo caused the tragedy and killed her mother. Billie Jo might be self-pity for making the mistake, and her family might collapse because of her mother’s death.

The accident is the fire. Just like what Iris post, it happen during her mother was making breakfast. It bring some big effect, Billie Jo tried to save her mother, but both of them were get hurt. That cause her mother died when her mother gave birth for the baby. Before her aunt came to her house to adopt the baby, baby died.
After, the heat, salt, water, and dust hurts her burns.
I was surprised when I was reading this part. The other people think that was Billie Jo's fault, but I don't think so. She try very hard to save her mother. It's hard to believe that her mother and her baby brother's were died. That's really surprised me.

Billie Jo's dad put a pail of kerosene next to the stove. And Ma thought the pail was filled with water so she lift it to make Billie Jo's dad's coffee. Then instead of making coffee, she made a rope of fire. When Ma ran across the kitchen out the porch door, screaming Billie Jo's dad for help, Billie Jo flew back to the kitchen because thinking of the burning pail, she throw the burning pail out the door, and it hit Ma. Then the result is both Billie Jo and Ma got burned bad.
(I think my answer to "What happened during The accident?"is pretty close to others...)
Well, I am not so surprised. Because from the introduction of the book back cover, I knew that there must happened some accident. That's why I am not so surprided. I am very sympathetic to Billie Jo, and I think Billie Jo's dad should behaved more sturdy. It will change Billie Jo's life a lot, because Billie Jo's Ma and Billie Jo must have the deep feelings. And Billie Jo was so young that she still need Billie Jo's Ma's charge and love. So I think the accident will have a great impact to Billie Jo's life.

Billie Jo and her mother burned bad. They both got hurt. finally, her mother died. I am surprised! I feel so sorry and sad. I think Billie Jo should be careful. She sould make sure that there is no one there. I think her mother's dead would affect Billie jo's life.
She might be sorry all the time.

Billie Jo's father put a pail of kerosene beside the stove. Her mother thought it was water, and poured it onto the stove to make coffee for her husband. Instead of making coffee, her mother turned the oil into fire. Ma was so frightened that she ran for help. Billie Jo tried to put out the fire, so she threw the burning pail out the door. Unfortunately, she didn't notice that Ma was walking back toward the door, and the fire landed right on Ma's apron. Ma caught on fire, Billie Jo tried to save her, but it was no use, both of them got burnt, especially Ma. A few days later, Ma died, giving birth to Billie Jo's little brother.
I was really surprised when I read about the accident. Normal day, normal life, who would have guessed that this would happen! I felt really sad for Billie Jo. If I were Billie Jo, I would blame myself for the rest of my life for killing my mother. This accident affected Billie Jo a lot. Her father changed, her family no longer acted like a family; Billie could not play the piano anymore, everything that she onced valued was gone. I believe that this will change her characteristics deeply!

I am not surprised by the accident. No, because accident are always nessisary in books. Like in Walk Two Moons Sal's mother didin't make it to Iaho, nither did the baby. The summery is quiet simular to Out Of the Dust.
The accident happened in a happy, bright mornig when birds chirp and crickets sing. Ma was building her husband a coffee when suddenly she knew it was a spill of kerosene. She realized the horrible mistake that took place, and did her best to call for back up.
Billie Joe found this delightful refreshement, unfortunatley burning
fiercly up, she showed an expression and flung the with depression the pail of addoring kerosene.
Mother came home with no warm greetments, when the flaming ball of fire caught her attention. It reached up to her appron like a stubborn child, making her actions go on wild.
Little Billy came, horrified by what she saw, desprately tried to save her mother. But by the time this chaos has ended so has the tiny cuddling lif of her younger brother.
And that was the tale of the devastating monster. The fire that gobbled up the whole of Little Billy.

Great job! All of you seem to have an understanding of what happened (even though the poem in the book could be confusing). I am interested in the different responses to if people are surprised or not. Even if you read the back of the book, did you know that it would be a fire that kills Ma and the baby?

Great job!

In our life, we can't predict what things will happen around you in the future, even you will do something that had already planned!

Billie's mother was an example, she considered that this oil was water, and she poured down on the stove, then, accident happened, she got lots of pain, and all people were dangerous.

It's a shock to me, and it's the point to change all the development in the story. I thought Billie was very sad, hard to stand this kind of situation, didn't know how to handle it. And I feel this was a hard time for Billie, or everyone. If Billie can stand this event, she will be stronger, and she can handle these kind of difficulties and handle them easily, to be in the possitive attitude, to face these difficulties. I hope she can do well in this book, to solve these problems and challenge herseif!

I think it change a lot in Billie's live. Billie might feel very terrible from killing her mother by accident. Other people would think Billie caused the tragedy and killed her mother. It isn't good for Billie.

Bilie Jo's father put a can of oil which is used to make fire by the stove. But her mother thought that was a can of water and she put that in the stove. So that action caused an accident of fire. Her mother went out for help. Billie sae that and through it out of the window. But,her mother came back surprisingly. Her mother was on fire and burned seriously. After that event, her mother gave birth to a baby. But it was too hard for her to give a baby birth. So she died. That really change Billie's live. It's because that's really a big chenge for her.

Billie Jo's father put a pail of kerosene by the stove. Her mother thought it was water and used it to make coffee, but instead it started the fire. Billie Jo was trying to put out the fire when her mother ran out for help, but when her mother came back, Billie Jo accidently caused her mother on fire. I think this accident is "surprising", especially at the time that seems not normal to have a fire accident. When I read it, I felt bad for Billie Jo's family. It was already a hard time they're living in, but then came an accident that was nobody's fault; everyone was just trying to do their best to give a little help. I think this has affected Billie Jo's life forever because she might blamed herself for the whole thing which wasn't really her fault. If I were Billie Jo, I might even blame myself for mother's death! Giving birth to a child is already a painful thing, no to say having burnt badly before giving birth, it would worsen mother's pain and make her more miserable. The other reason I think it will change her life forever is that the hands will remind her of the accident.

p.s. By the way, I wonder why Billie Jo's father put the kerosene in the kitchen.... (He doesn't need the kerosene. Everything was hot already! j/k)

The accident was begin with the kerosene which Billie Jo's father put near the stove. When Billie Jo's mother wanted to make him coffee, she thought it was water and accidently cause the big fire. When the fire started, Billie Jo's mother ran to find Daddy. Later Billie Jo came and threw the kerosene away. Then, her mother came back, and caught the fire on her apron. And that makes her burned badly. She was pregnant, after the badly burnd, she became very weak. She died when she born her baby. I'm really surprised. At first I think it may be common accident that would be forgotten very easily, but I'm wrong. It totally changed her life. It is a very big changing in the story.

I don't think it's Billie's fault, it should be her father's fault. He should put the pair of oil beside the stove. Even if her mother did not make a fire accident, it still is a dangerous thingin the kitchen. If the stove become so hot, the pail of oil might burned by itself. I feel confused about why her father put the oil in the kitchen. i think it will change Billie Jo's life very much. Billie could had a hard time for this event. she might thought she killed her mother. Her relationshop with her father bocame bad. it should be a big effect to Billie Jo.

The accident occurred because Billie Jo’s father put a pail of kerosene near the stove. One morning while Billie Jo’s mother was making breakfast and she thought that the pail was filled with water so she used it to make coffee for Billie Jo’s dad. Instead of making the coffee Billie Jo’s mother made a rope of fire. She was frightened and she ran out screaming for the dad’s help. Billie Jo was trying to put out the fire so she through the burning pail out side the door but Billie Jo didn’t notice that Ma was walking back so the flaming oil splashed onto Ma’s apron and suddenly Ma was on fire. Ma and Billie Jo were burned badly. After the fire accident Billie Jo's ma die of giving birth to her brother, the fire accident and the death of her mother causes Billie Jo to changed her life and it made her life worst. Billie Jo hate her father more than ever she blame her father for the fire and she is also angry with her father with not being there when her ma was trying to give birth to the brother but the father was at Guymon drinking. I was kind of half surprised by “The Accident” because why would a person put a pail of kerosene next to the stove and how can a person pour something onto the stove with out double-checking what is it.

Billy Jo's father put a pail of kerosene beside the stove, and it caused a bad accident. It happened while Billy Jo's mom was making breakfast. Her mom thought the pail of oil was water, so she poured it into the stove, and she made a fire accident. She was frightened, so she went for daddy. Billy Jo was in the house and thought the fire was dangerous, so she took the burning pail and threw it out. She didn't know mom was coming back, and the flaming oil splashed on mom. Mom got badly burned, and she died a few days later when she born a baby. I think this tragedy is drmatic. I am sorry for billy jo . She was just trying to put the fire out, but she killed her mom. I think the change of billy Jo's life after her mom dying is the economic pressure and the mood of Billy Jo.

Poor Ma! I'm so sorry that she had this kind of tragedy. As I began to read this poem, I start thinking what would happen later. After I read it, I was so surprised and wanted commiserate Ma. It was so terrible. That day daddy put a pail of kerosene next to the stove and Ma, fixing breakfast, thinking the pail was filled with water. Ma lifted it and poured it to make coffee. Instead, she made a rope of fire rosing up from the stove to the pail and the kerosene burst into flames. I seemed like a dangerous view. Later, Billie Jo flew back and grabbed it, throwing it out the door. unfortunately, the flaming oil splashed onto Ma and she was a column of fire. Billie Jo did her best to save her mom and the baby. But Ma got burned badly. As I read it, I cried. It is so dramatic and unbelievable. I know that Billie Jo tried to save her Ma. But Ma died after few days and the baby died later. I think the accident would influence Billie Jo's life for a long time. Other people might also think that Billie Jo killed her mom. I think Billie Jo would felt sorry and be self-pity about the mistake that she made, and her family might collapse because the sorrow to Ma's death.

When I read this part of the story, it really shocked me. Billie’s father put a pail of kerosene beside the stove. A serious accident happened while her mom was making the breakfast. Billie’s mom put thought it was water and poured to the stove because of this it cause the fire accident. In this paragraph it described about the harm and the pain that the mom had. I felt really surprise and sorry because the accident happened too soon and it should not happen, and it cause the baby and her mom died. I think after this Billie’s family live harder.

Billie Jo's father put a bottle of kerosene by the stove. Ma wanted to make breakfast and coffee for her husband, so she picked up the pail and poured the "water" to the stove. And she was on fire! Billie Jo wanted to help her, but she did it in a wrong way, so her hands got burned too. I was very frightened and suprised when I read this part. I thought it was very unfortunate that her mother got burned, especially with a baby in her big belly. I thought she and her baby might died! If I was Billie Jo, I would be guilty because I had thown the pail to my mom and had killed her. I'd be sad because Ma was gone, and Franklin was gone. And also I'd blame my father, too. But I would try to get along with my father because we both had lost someone very important in our lives, and I would forgive him no matter if he forgives me or not.

Billie Jo's mother poured the oil to the stove and made the accident. Billie and her mother can't stop the fire and Billie want to save mother so they both get hurt. Billie's mother died and Billie is seriously injured. And because of the dirty thing of the fire accident, the baby died, too.
I think author was really violent but cruel. It was not only scare Billie Jo, I think all the reader will surprize. Everyone will feel sad and that she is her mother. I think this will let her understand that her mom is really important to her and her family.

Fire on my body directly?! Maybe kill me first!!! I think it is a really sad situation because I really like Billie Jo's mom. I think she is so kind that even though I don't know about her like her. Also I feel sorry for Billie Jo because it is really great to have mother stay beside when you have some problems. Like me, If I have any problems, I will go to talk with my mom. She always gives me many good solutions. Not only this, when you are happy, you can chat with her, share you happiness to her. But now...Billie Jo can't do these things anymore. She only can think of her, looking at her pictures( is there any photos in that time?! )but not feeling her. Oh...so sad that I am going to cry...
And one more thing that I think will affect her life strongly is that when her mom needed some water after burning up of her body, her dad wasn't there and drink beer?!( or wine? I know he went out and drink something...)Hey!! Don't you think it is a little....( I don't know how to describe but that doesn't feel right!) I thihk Billie Jo will hate his father because of it...
